Answer one real Design Manager question now

A question a Design Manager panel actually asks, answered out loud, scored on what you said and how you said it. Under two minutes, and nothing to sign up for.

Present a project your team shipped. I want to hear what your involvement actually was, what you changed about how the team approached it, and what you would do differently.

We never store the audio. Your answer is deleted within 24 hours unless you save the result.

Design mock interview questions

What design panels ask, why they ask it, and what a strong answer contains. Pick a role above to practice these live, and the interviewer will cover the question you choose and score your answer.

  1. 1.

Walk me through one project in your portfolio, from the brief to what shipped.

Why they ask it: Portfolio walkthroughs are the core of design interviews. The interviewer is listening for reasoning, not visuals.

A strong answer: The constraint you were solving, the options you explored and discarded, what changed after feedback, and how the shipped version performed.

  2. 2.

Tell me about design feedback that was hard to hear. What did you do with it?

Why they ask it: Design work is critiqued constantly. This tests ego versus craft.

A strong answer: The specific critique, what you initially disagreed with, what you eventually accepted, and how the work improved.

  3. 3.

How do you work with engineers as a design?

Why they ask it: Handoff quality determines whether the design survives implementation.

A strong answer: Involving engineering early, designing for the states nobody asks for (empty, error, loading), and an example of a constraint that improved the design.

  4. 4.

How do you know a design is working after launch?

Why they ask it: Tests whether you close the loop or move to the next brief.

A strong answer: A behavioral metric plus qualitative evidence, and an example where the data made you go back and change something.

  5. 5.

Tell me about a time you had to design within heavy constraints.

Why they ask it: Real design is constrained. Unconstrained portfolio pieces don't predict job performance.

A strong answer: The constraint (legacy system, brand, accessibility, timeline), the creative move it forced, and why the result was better for it.

  6. 6.

    How do you approach accessibility?

Why they ask it: Increasingly a hard requirement, and a fast way to tell a thorough designer from a decorative one.

A strong answer: Contrast, focus order, and non-visual affordances treated as part of the design rather than a QA pass, with a concrete example.
