Sales Reps

Career change from sales: where your skills carry over

Most people who leave sales keep the skills and drop the part they are tired of: the quota, the cold calls, or the uncertain paycheck. Talking to strangers, handling objections, running a pipeline and reading a buyer are useful in a lot of jobs.

Below are the moves sales reps make most often, what each one asks for, and a first step you could take this week. If you are not sure which fits, tell Carmen what you do now and which part of it you want to leave behind.

Roles sales reps move into

  • Customer success manager

Helps existing customers get value from the product, so they renew and grow. Suits reps who like the relationship more than the chase, and who were often the one customers called after the deal closed.

    What it takes
Usually no new credential. Some familiarity with onboarding, renewals and support tools helps.
    First step
Ask your company's customer success lead what a typical week looks like and whether they hire from sales.
  • Account manager

Owns a book of existing accounts and grows them through renewals and upsells. There is still a number, but most of the work is with people who already know you. Suits reps who want less cold outreach.

    What it takes
No new credential. A record of retaining or expanding accounts is what hiring managers look for.
    First step
Pull any renewal or expansion numbers you have touched and write them as résumé lines.
  • Sales enablement or sales trainer

Builds onboarding, playbooks and coaching for the sales team. Suits the rep who already trains new hires and writes the talk tracks everyone borrows.

    Pay
Median training and development specialist pay was $69,280 a year in May 2025 (BLS).
    What it takes
No license. A portfolio of training you have run (onboarding decks, call scripts, role plays) helps a lot.
    First step
Offer to run the next new-hire onboarding session on your team and keep the materials as your portfolio.
  • Recruiter

Finds, screens and pitches candidates for open roles. It is a sales job with people as the product: prospecting, outreach, objections and closing all carry over. Agency recruiting is closest to sales; in-house is steadier.

    Pay
Median human resources specialist pay, the BLS group that includes recruiters, was $75,940 a year in May 2025.
    What it takes
No license needed. Knowing an applicant tracking system helps but is learned on the job.
    First step
Talk to one recruiter who hires for your company and ask what they wish new recruiters already knew.
  • Product marketing

Shapes how the product is positioned, priced and explained to buyers. Sales reps bring something product marketers often lack: hundreds of real conversations about why people buy and why they do not.

    What it takes
No credential required. Writing samples (a battlecard, a one-pager, a customer story) are the usual proof.
    First step
Write a one-page battlecard against your most common competitor, based on what you hear on calls.
  • Sales operations or revenue operations

Runs the CRM, territories, reporting and comp plan mechanics behind the sales team. Suits reps who fix the dashboard nobody trusts and like spreadsheets more than they admit.

    What it takes
No license. CRM admin skills (Salesforce or HubSpot) and comfort with spreadsheets are the usual asks. Admin certifications are optional.
    First step
Ask your ops team for one small reporting project and do it on your own time.
  • Real estate agent

Helps people buy and sell homes, usually on commission. It is still sales, with more independence and more income swings. Suits reps who want to work for themselves and can handle months without a closing.

    Pay
Median real estate sales agent pay was $52,830 a year in May 2025 (BLS). Earnings vary widely because most pay is commission.
    What it takes
Every state requires a license, which means prelicensing coursework and a state exam.
    First step
Look up your state real estate commission's prelicensing hours and exam requirements.

How a conversation with Carmen starts

Carmen asks before she suggests. An illustrative example, not a real person.

Five years closing SaaS deals. I'm tired of quota resets every quarter and I don't know what else I'm good for.

Five years of closing means you can run a discovery call, handle pushback and keep a pipeline honest. Which part of the job would you keep if you could?

Onboarding new reps, honestly. I like when someone new books their first meeting.

Then sales enablement is the first thing to look at. It is that part of your job, all week, without a quota. Want me to map what you already have against an enablement posting near you?

Questions & answers

What jobs can you get with sales experience?
Customer success, account management, sales enablement and training, recruiting, product marketing, partnerships, sales or revenue operations, and real estate. Most of them value the same skills: talking to people, handling objections and working to a goal.
Will I take a pay cut if I leave sales?
Sometimes, because you lose commission. Compare base pay to base pay, and look at your average year rather than your best one. Some roles, like account management and recruiting, keep a variable component.
How do I explain leaving sales in an interview?
Say what you are moving toward, not what you are escaping. For example: "The part of sales I was best at was onboarding new reps, and I want to do that full time." Then back it with an example.
Is it easier to switch inside my current company?
Usually yes. Customer success, enablement and operations teams often hire from sales because you already know the product and the customers. Ask around internally before applying elsewhere.
