Will AI replace sales reps? What is changing, and what to learn next
Not the whole job. AI already handles a lot of the work around selling: researching accounts, drafting emails, writing call notes and summaries, and sending some high-volume outbound. The parts that decide whether a deal closes (building trust, running discovery, negotiating, and steering a complex deal through several buyers) are still done by people.
The BLS expects little or no change in employment for wholesale and manufacturing sales reps over the next decade, and says advances in AI and automation, such as chat bots, may limit growth. That hits the most repetitive top-of-funnel work hardest, which is why SDRs ask "will AI replace SDRs" first. Below are the skills worth learning next, and where to start.

Discovery that goes past the script
A tool can draft the first email. It cannot sit with a buyer and find out what is really driving the purchase, who else cares, and what happens if they do nothing. Reps who run strong discovery calls are the ones companies keep when outbound gets automated.
- First step
- Record your next three discovery calls (with permission) and count how many follow-up questions you asked after the first answer.
Negotiation
Pricing, terms and the last few objections before signature are where relationships and judgment matter most. Practicing negotiation out loud, including walking away, is one of the fastest ways to move from volume work to deal work.
- First step
- Write down the three concessions you give most often and what you could ask for in return for each.
Running complex, multi-stakeholder deals
Enterprise deals involve procurement, legal, security reviews and several people who can say no. Keeping those people aligned over months is human work. Ask to shadow or support a larger deal so you learn how it moves.
- First step
- Ask an enterprise AE if you can join the internal deal review for one of their open opportunities.
Using AI for research and drafting, and checking it
Reps who use AI well get through account research and first drafts faster, then fix what the tool got wrong: a made-up detail, a stale job title, a tone that sounds like everyone else's email. Being the rep who catches those errors keeps your outreach credible.
- First step
- Use your company's approved AI tool to research one account, then check every claim it made against the company's own site.
Account management and expansion
Growing existing customers depends on trust you have already built, knowledge of how they use the product, and timing that a sequence cannot read. It is one of the steadier places to take a sales skill set as outbound changes.
- First step
- Ask your account management team which renewals or upsells this quarter started from a conversation, and how they spotted it.
Sales and revenue operations
Someone has to choose the AI tools, connect them to the CRM, and check whether they actually create pipeline. Reps who understand both the selling and the systems are useful in those decisions.
- What it takes
- No license. CRM admin skills and comfort with reports are the usual asks.
- First step
- Offer to help your ops team measure one AI or automation tool your team already uses.
Deep industry or technical knowledge
Buyers in technical fields want a rep who understands their world. BLS pay data shows median pay for technical and scientific product reps well above other wholesale reps, and that depth is hard for a tool to fake on a live call.
- Pay
- Median pay was $104,920 for technical and scientific product reps and $72,080 for other wholesale and manufacturing reps in May 2025 (BLS).
- First step
- Pick the industry your best customers come from and read its main trade publication every week for a month.
Coaching and managing other reps
As tools take over parts of the work, teams still need someone to coach calls, review deals and hire well. The BLS projects sales manager jobs to grow over the next decade.
- Pay
- Median sales manager pay was $148,270 a year in May 2025 (BLS).
- First step
- Offer to review one newer rep's call recording each week and give them written feedback.

How a conversation with Carmen starts
Carmen asks before she suggests. An illustrative example, not a real person.
My company just rolled out an AI SDR tool that sends sequences on its own. Am I next?
It is taking the part of your job that was already the most repetitive. What happens after a prospect replies? Who runs that first call?
Still me. I qualify them and book the AE.
Then the valuable part of your role is the conversation. Let's make that your case for the AE seat. Want to practice a discovery call now, with me playing a skeptical buyer?

Questions & answers
- Will AI replace sales reps?
- It is replacing tasks more than whole jobs. The BLS projects little or no change in employment for wholesale and manufacturing sales reps from 2025 to 2035, with about 123,400 openings a year, and says AI and automation may limit growth.
- Will AI replace SDRs?
- SDR work is the most exposed part of sales, because research, list building and first-touch emails are the easiest tasks to automate. Qualifying a prospect in a real conversation is harder to automate, so SDRs who build discovery skills are in a better position.
- What parts of sales will AI change first?
- Account research, email drafting, call notes and summaries, CRM updates, and some high-volume outbound. Discovery, negotiation and complex deals with many stakeholders are the slowest to change.
- Should I leave sales because of AI?
- Not on its own. Look at which tasks in your role are being automated at your company and move toward the ones that are not, such as closing, account management or sales leadership.
