How to become a senior paralegal, and how to ask for the raise
Senior paralegal is mostly about what you own. Firms tend to give the title to the paralegal who runs a matter end to end, catches problems before an attorney does, and trains the people around them. Titles and pay bands vary by firm, so ask how yours defines it.
Pay has a wide range. BLS reports that the lowest 10 percent of paralegals and legal assistants earned less than $44,740 in May 2025 and the highest 10 percent earned more than $101,500. Where you sit depends on your employer, your practice area and what you can show you handle.

Own a matter from intake to close
The clearest sign of a senior paralegal is an attorney trusting you with the whole file: the calendar, the documents, the client updates. Owning one matter end to end gives you the proof you need when you ask for the title.
- First step
- Ask your supervising attorney which upcoming matter you could run day to day, with them checking in weekly.
Earn the NALA Certified Paralegal (CP) credential
NALA's CP exam has two sections taken in order, a multiple-choice Knowledge Exam and a written Skills Exam. NALA offers eligibility routes through paralegal studies, a bachelor's degree with paralegal coursework, or on-the-job experience. Some employers prefer or require certification, according to BLS.
- What it takes
- Exam fees apply. The CP is valid for five years, and renewal takes 50 hours of continuing legal education, including at least five hours of legal ethics.
- First step
- Read NALA's eligibility requirements and confirm which of the three categories you already qualify under.
Go deep in one practice area
A paralegal who knows one area cold, such as patents, bankruptcy, real estate closings or complex litigation, is harder to replace than a generalist. Depth is also what justifies a higher rate on the bill.
- First step
- List the matters you have worked in the last year by practice area and pick the one you want to be known for.
Become the go-to for your firm's tools
Case management, e-discovery and AI tools all need someone who knows them well and can teach others. Being that person raises your value in a way attorneys see every week.
- First step
- Offer to write a one-page how-to for the tool your team struggles with most and walk the newest hire through it.
Train and review other paralegals
Many senior paralegal roles include supervising or checking the work of junior staff. Showing you can do that before you have the title makes the promotion an easy call.
- First step
- Offer to review a junior paralegal's next filing packet before it goes to the attorney.
Consider where you work
Pay depends heavily on the employer. BLS reports a May 2025 median of $81,470 for paralegals in the federal government and $80,120 in finance and insurance, compared with $61,770 in legal services. Sometimes the raise is a move in-house or into government.
- Pay
- Median $81,470 in the federal government, $80,120 in finance and insurance, $61,770 in legal services, May 2025 (BLS).
- First step
- Search in-house and government paralegal postings in your practice area and note the pay ranges listed.
Ask for the raise with evidence
Bring a short list of what you now own, the matters you ran, the hours or errors you saved, and the pay ranges you found in real postings. Ask for a specific number and title, and ask what would get you there if the answer is not yet.
- First step
- Write down three things you did this year that an attorney would otherwise have had to do, with the matter and the result for each.
Sample conversation
How a conversation with Carmen starts
Carmen asks before she suggests. An illustrative example, not a real person.
I've been a paralegal for five years and I basically run our biggest case. My title hasn't changed.
Then you already do senior work. What would your attorney say you handle that nobody else on the team could?
The whole production schedule, and all the client updates. They'd be lost without it.
Let's turn that into three concrete points and a number, then rehearse the conversation so you can ask without apologizing.

Questions & answers
- How do I become a senior paralegal?
- Firms usually promote the paralegal who already runs matters on their own, catches problems early and helps train others. Ask your firm how it defines the title, then build a record of owning work at that level.
- Does paralegal certification lead to higher pay?
- BLS says some employers prefer or require certification, but there is no guaranteed raise attached to it. NALA's CP credential is one option. Check what employers in your area and practice area ask for before you pay for an exam.
- How much do senior paralegals make?
- BLS does not report senior paralegals separately. For all paralegals and legal assistants, the median was $62,890 in May 2025, and the highest 10 percent earned more than $101,500. Compare postings for your practice area and city.
- How do I ask for a paralegal raise?
- Bring specific evidence of what you now handle, real pay ranges from postings, and a clear number. If the answer is no, ask exactly what would need to change and when you can revisit it.
