Accountants

Will AI replace accountants? An honest answer, and what to learn next

AI is changing which parts of an accountant's job need a person. Data entry, bank reconciliations, invoice matching and much of AP and AR are being automated. The BLS expects accountant and auditor jobs to grow 5 percent from 2025 to 2035, and says new technology is not expected to reduce overall demand.

The clerical side is different: BLS projects bookkeeping, accounting and auditing clerk jobs to decline 6 percent over the same decade because software already does much of that work. The safest place to stand is where judgment is needed: advising, controls, tax planning, and checking numbers that a machine produced.

Skills to learn next

  • Reviewing AI-produced numbers

Someone has to check what automated tools post, match and flag, and explain why it is right. That review is accounting judgment, and it grows as more work is automated.

    First step
Pick one automated rule or match in your system this month and trace a sample of its results back to source documents.
  • Internal controls over automated processes

When a bot or an AI tool does the posting, the control question changes: who approved the rule, who can change it, and how errors get caught. People who can design and test those controls are hard to find.

    First step
Write down the controls around one automated process at your company, and note where a person still signs off.
  • Advisory and business partnering

Explaining what the numbers mean to a manager or a business owner, and what they should do about it. The routine work shrinks, and this part becomes most of the job.

    First step
After your next close, write three sentences on what changed and why for a non-accountant, and share it with a manager.
  • Tax planning

Filing is increasingly automated. Planning (timing, entity choices, what a decision will cost at tax time) still needs someone who knows the client and the rules.

    First step
Take one client or business unit and list the decisions coming up this year that have tax consequences.
  • Data skills: SQL, Power Query and a BI tool

Pulling and shaping your own data means you run the automation instead of waiting for it. It also opens FP&A and analyst roles.

    First step
Automate one manual spreadsheet step you do every month with Power Query.
  • Using AI tools well yourself

Knowing where AI helps (drafting memos, summarizing contracts, first-pass variance commentary) and where it makes confident mistakes. The accountant who can do both is faster and safer.

    First step
Try an AI tool on a task with a known answer, like a memo you already wrote, and note every place it got something wrong.

How a conversation with Carmen starts

Carmen asks before she suggests. An illustrative example, not a real person.

Half my week is reconciliations and my company just bought an automation tool. Am I next?

The reconciliations probably shrink. The question is what you do with the time. When a rec doesn't tie, who figures out why?

Me, usually. I'm the one who knows where the weird entries come from.

That is the part that grows. Let's make you the person who owns the new tool's exceptions and controls, and practice how you would pitch that to your manager.

Questions & answers

Will AI replace accountants?
Not as a whole. BLS projects accountant and auditor jobs to grow 5 percent from 2025 to 2035 and says automation is not expected to reduce overall demand. Routine tasks like data entry and matching are shrinking, so the job is shifting toward review and advice.
Which accounting jobs are most at risk from automation?
Roles that are mostly data entry, matching and routine reconciliation. BLS projects bookkeeping, accounting and auditing clerk jobs to fall 6 percent from 2025 to 2035, because software already does much of that work.
Should accountants learn to code?
You do not need to become a developer. SQL, Power Query and one reporting tool cover most of what helps an accountant, and they take months, not years.
Is accounting still a good career?
BLS projects about 115,300 openings for accountants and auditors each year over the decade. The work that stays is more about judgment than keystrokes, so plan your skills around that.
