Will AI replace retail jobs? What self-checkout and automation change

Some retail jobs are shrinking, and cashier work is the clearest case. US government projections show cashier jobs declining over the next ten years, and they name self-service checkout and online sales as the reasons. Retail sales jobs overall are projected to hold roughly steady, with hundreds of thousands of openings a year as people move on.

The work that holds up is the work a kiosk or a website does poorly: helping someone choose, fixing a problem, getting online orders out the door, and running the store. Below are the skills that move you toward that work, with a first step for each.

Skills that grow in value

  • Product expertise in a high-consideration department

People still want help with purchases that are expensive or confusing: appliances, mattresses, electronics, cosmetics, tools, eyewear. Associates who really know the products and can match them to a customer's needs are hard to replace with a screen.

    First step
Pick the department where customers ask the most questions and learn the top five products well enough to compare them without notes.
  • Solving problems and handling escalations

Returns, price errors, broken orders and upset customers still land with a person. As machines take the simple transactions, the people who calm things down and fix hard cases carry more of the store.

    First step
Ask your manager which customer issues you are allowed to resolve yourself, and take the next one instead of passing it up.
  • Online order fulfillment

Online sales are growing, and many stores now pick, pack and hand over those orders. Knowing the pickup, ship-from-store and returns process makes you useful on the part of the business that is expanding.

    First step
Ask to be trained on your store's online order pickup or ship-from-store process.
  • Running the store's technology

Self-checkout lanes, handheld scanners, registers and printers all break, and someone has to fix them and help customers use them. The associate who troubleshoots the tech is building the experience that IT help desk jobs ask for.

    Pay
Median pay for computer user support specialists was $61,860 a year in May 2025 (BLS).
    First step
For two weeks, write down every tech problem you fix at work and how you fixed it.
  • Inventory, ordering and store data

Automated ordering and inventory systems still need people who can spot when the numbers are wrong. Learning counts, receiving, shrink and the reports your manager reads moves you toward operations and management work.

    First step
Ask to shadow the next inventory count or truck unload and learn how the numbers are entered and checked.
  • Leading a team

Scheduling, training, coaching and making calls on the floor are people work. Shift leads, key holders and assistant managers do the parts of retail that automation touches least.

    Pay
Median pay for first-line supervisors of retail sales workers was $23.33 an hour in May 2025 (BLS).
    First step
Offer to train the next new hire and write a one-page checklist for their first week.
  • Visual merchandising

Building displays and setting up the floor so products sell is skilled work that depends on judgment about space, color and what customers notice. Suits associates who like resets and making a section look right.

    First step
Ask your manager if you can help with the next reset or display change and take a before and after photo.

How a conversation with Carmen starts

Carmen asks before she suggests. An illustrative example, not a real person.

My store just added eight self-checkout lanes. I'm a cashier and I feel like I'm next.

That worry makes sense. Cashier jobs are projected to shrink. What else do you already do on shift besides ringing people up?

I fix the self-checkouts when they freeze, and I help with online pickup orders.

Those are two of the growing parts of the store. Let's put both on your résumé and plan how to ask for more hours on online orders.

Questions & answers

Will AI replace retail jobs?
It changes some more than others. BLS projects cashier jobs to decline 6% from 2025 to 2035, citing self-service checkout and online sales, while retail sales jobs overall are projected to see little or no change. Work that involves helping customers decide, fixing problems and running the store holds up best.
Is self-checkout replacing cashiers?
It is one of the reasons BLS gives for the projected decline in cashier jobs, along with online sales. Stores still need people to run, fix and watch those lanes, and to help customers who get stuck.
What retail jobs are safest from automation?
Roles built on judgment and people: product specialists, customer service desk, online order fulfillment, visual merchandising, and supervisors and managers. No job is fully safe, so building a skill you can take to another employer is the best protection.
Should I leave retail because of AI?
Not in a panic. Look at what your store is adding, whether that is self-checkout, online pickup or new systems, and move toward the parts that are growing. If you want to leave, plan the move while you still have a paycheck.
